Project and Visio licences for planning and diagrams
Project is for planning projects: tasks, deadlines, dependencies between tasks and the people assigned to them. Visio is for diagrams: process maps, org charts, network diagrams, office floor plans.
The Standard edition works on a single computer. Project Professional adds resource management across projects and teamwork through Project Server; the Project Professional 2016–2024 versions in the shop also include a Project Server access licence (Device CAL), in the version shown on the product page. Visio Professional adds templates for processes (BPMN), software (UML), networks and engineering, and links diagrams to data in Excel.
What changes from one year to the next. The core features stay the same. Project 2019 brought task linking from a drop-down list and task progress shown directly on the timeline; Visio Professional 2019 brought templates for databases and website wireframes. Versions 2021 and 2024 change little in terms of features. The difference that matters when you buy is how long Microsoft releases security updates: until 09.10.2029 for the 2024 version and 13.10.2026 for 2021; support for 2019 ended on 14.10.2025. The licence stays valid after that date.
Requirements. Versions 2019, 2021 and 2024 run on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and need a 1.6 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space. Project 2024 installs on 64-bit only. They don't run on a Mac.
All of them are perpetual volume licences for one computer. They install without Office too. If the computer already has Office, it must also be a volume edition (Standard or Professional Plus), or the installation won't go through.

Standard or Professional?
Standard if you plan or draw on your own. Professional if you work with other people on the same projects (Project) or need the technical templates and the link to your data (Visio).
I have Office Home and Business. Will Visio work alongside it?
No. The Project and Visio products in the shop are volume editions and only work alongside volume Office Standard or Professional Plus, or on a computer without Office.
Do I need Project Server?
Only if you want your plans in one shared place, with resources shared across projects. For a plan on a single computer, Project Standard is enough.
