Perpetual VMware vSphere licences
Since Broadcom took over VMware, new perpetual licences are no longer sold: the vendor offers subscriptions only. The vSphere licences in this category are perpetual, bought by their first owners before the change, and come with their documents.
One licence covers one physical processor with up to 32 cores. A processor with more than 32 cores needs another licence.
vSphere Standard has what a small cluster needs: moving virtual machines between servers without downtime (vMotion) and restarting them automatically on another server when one fails (High Availability). vSphere Enterprise Plus adds automatic load balancing across servers (DRS), the distributed virtual switch and host configuration profiles.
Two things to know before you buy. The licences don't include the vendor's support and subscription contract (SnS), so you stay on the version you bought. And to manage several hosts centrally (vMotion and HA included) you also need vCenter Server, which is licensed separately; it isn't in the catalogue, so we include it in the quote on request.

Questions about VMware
Standard or Enterprise Plus?
Standard for 2–3 servers, where moving machines and automatic restarts are all you need. Enterprise Plus when you have more hosts and want the load to balance itself across them.
Do I get updates?
Not from the vendor. The SnS contract isn't included, so you use the version you bought (7 or 8).
How many licences do I need?
One for every physical processor in every host, with up to 32 cores per processor. Two servers with two 16-core processors each means 4 licences.
