Licences
What the end of Microsoft support means for your licences
From 13 October 2026, Microsoft stops releasing security updates and fixes, and stops providing technical assistance, for Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021. The licences remain valid and the programs keep working. What changes is the risk: any vulnerability discovered from then on stays open.
What stops and what does not
“End of support” sounds like an expiry date. It is not. Here is exactly what changes:
| Stays the same | Stops |
|---|---|
| The licence: your right to use the program does not expire | Security updates |
| The program: Word, Excel and Outlook open and work | Bug fixes |
| Your documents: your files open as before | Microsoft technical assistance by phone or chat |
| The installation on the computer the licence is for | Any guarantee that the program works with new Microsoft 365 services |
In short: the licence you paid for is still yours. What you lose is maintenance.
The timeline: which versions are affected
The dates are those Microsoft publishes on its Microsoft Lifecycle pages.

How to check which version you have: in Word or Excel, open File → Account → About Word (or About Excel). The exact version is shown there.
Who can safely stay on an unsupported version
Not every computer running Office 2019 or 2021 is a problem. You can stay on your current version without much concern if:
- the computer does not receive documents from outside: for example, a workstation on a production floor used to fill in a single internal spreadsheet;
- a specialist program requires exactly this version of Office, and its developer has not yet confirmed support for a newer one;
- the computer is due to be replaced within a few months anyway, and you will change Office along with it.
In these cases, the licence still does its job, and spending money now achieves little.
Where the real risk is
The risk is not that the program stops working. The risk is that documents are one of the usual ways in for an attack: a fake invoice in Word, an Excel spreadsheet with macros, an attachment that appears to come from a supplier. On a supported version, Microsoft closes these gaps as they are found. On an unsupported version, they stay open.
The risk is higher if:
- the computer receives documents from clients and suppliers every day (accounts, purchasing, sales);
- the company handles personal data or client data that the law requires you to protect;
- a large client, a bank or an auditor asks you to confirm that your software is up to date.
If you stay on an unsupported version, reduce the risk:
- block macros in files downloaded from the internet (the setting is in the Trust Center);
- keep Windows up to date and your antivirus active;
- do not open unexpected attachments straight from an email.
Your options
| Option | How you pay | Support | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay on your current version | nothing now | no updates | isolated computers, programs that need exactly this version |
| Office LTSC 2024 | once, perpetual licence | until 9 October 2029 | companies that want Office installed, without a subscription |
| Microsoft 365 | monthly or annual subscription | for as long as you pay, always on the latest version | companies that also want email, cloud storage and an up-to-date Office |
| Zoho Workplace | monthly or annual subscription | for as long as you pay | companies that want email on their own domain and documents in the browser; Writer, Sheet and Show open and save .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files |
There is no single right answer. An accounting office with complex Excel macros needs Office installed. A sales team that writes quotes and simple spreadsheets can work comfortably in Zoho Workplace.
Why we still sell unsupported versions
In our shop you will also find Office 2013, 2016, 2019 and Office LTSC 2021. That is not an oversight. Some companies need a specific version: for compatibility with an accounting or design program, for a computer that never connects to the internet, or to keep a fleet of computers on the same version.
On each product page we show, for information, until when Microsoft supports that version. You choose knowing that.
What to do this week
- List your computers and note the Office and Windows version on each.
- Mark the at-risk computers: those that receive documents from outside or handle client data.
- For those, choose an option from the table above.
- For the rest, apply the three risk-reduction measures.
If you like, send us the list and we will suggest what to change, computer by computer, with the price for each.
Questions
Will Office 2021 stop working on 13 October 2026?
No. The program keeps working after that date and the licence remains valid. What stops is security updates, bug fixes and Microsoft technical assistance.
Can I reinstall Office 2021 after that date?
Your licence still gives you the right to use the program under its licence terms. If you are replacing the computer or reinstalling Windows, write to us first and we will check what your licence allows.
Can I upgrade from Office 2021 to Office LTSC 2024 by paying only the difference?
No. In our shop, Office LTSC 2024 is bought as a new perpetual licence. Your 2021 licence remains yours and you can keep using it.
Is it worth buying Office 2021 now, given that support is ending?
Only if you have a specific reason for that version, such as compatibility with a particular program. Otherwise, Office LTSC 2024 gives you support until October 2029.
What about Windows 10?
Support for Windows 10 Home and Pro ended on 14 October 2025. The Enterprise LTSC editions have their own dates, listed in the table above.
This guide is general information, accurate on the date it was updated. Manufacturers' prices and rules change, so check them before you decide.
